Help Us Bring a Warm Christmas to LGBTQ People in Cross River and Akwa Ibom
Every year during the holidays, while many families are celebrating, a lot of LGBTQ youths and young adults across Cross River and Akwa Ibom find themselves alone. Many have been pushed away by their families or simply have no safe place to go. For them, Christmas is often a very difficult period, filled with loneliness and emotional strain rather than joy.
At The Beyond Infinity Initiative (TBII), we have spent time speaking with the community and listening to their stories. One thing has been very clear. The holidays take a heavy toll on people's mental health. The isolation, the silence from family, the feeling of being forgotten and the added pressure of Nigeria's economic situation all combine to create a very painful season for many LGBTQ people.
We want to change that, even if only in a small but meaningful way.
This December, we are hosting a Christmas gathering in Calabar, open to LGBTQ community members from both Cross River State and Akwa Ibom State. Our goal is simple. We want people to feel cared for, welcomed and surrounded by community during a season that often reminds them of what they lack.
Our Goal
We are hoping to raise 5,000 USD to make this gathering possible and to provide essential items to the people who attend. These include:
- Food and refreshments
- Toiletries and basic hygiene products
- Sanitary pads and feminine hygiene supplies
- Small care items that help people feel seen and supported
Why This Matters
Nigeria's economic situation has made life extremely tough. Prices keep rising and many LGBTQ people who already face discrimination are struggling to meet their basic needs. When you combine financial hardship with family rejection and loneliness during the holidays, the emotional weight becomes even heavier.
Something as simple as sharing a meal, receiving a hygiene kit or being in a room where you feel safe can make a huge difference. It reminds someone that they matter.
